Athena is absolutely a meaningful server environment in
departments. Even beyond the usefulness of Athena on its own
(AFS, kerberos, moira lists, zephyr, etc), WIN.MIT.EDU is still
in heavy use by necessity, and Athena plugs into it in lots of
useful ways. WIN.MIT.EDU groups and containers are synched to
Moira, printing from Windows and MacOS still goes through Athena
and is most easily managed with Athena tools....
I've set up a dozen or so servers for three departments in the
last couple of years and all of the Linux ones were Athena.
