Using acroread, one cannot open a signed PDF (such as those given out but
the registrar) on Athena, if you have an AFS homedir. Works fine on local
disk. A preliminary strace shows it attempting to talk to something on fd
3 and getting EAGAIN constantly until it gives up and briefly displays a
"You're not connected to the network" dialog and quits.
