It works on athena.dialup.mit.edu, I think emacs is an older version.
Maybe compiling the latest version from athena and put it on linerva.

I just found out about linerva, I have a tops-20 emulator
which works under linux, so I tried "ssh linux.mit.edu" and
that got me there. I haven't run emacs on linerva until
after I logged in and tried it.

I'm not familiar with rmail; Did this used to work and it just broke
recently, or have you not tried it on Linerva before? Does it work on
   Athena 9 (e.g. on athena.dialup.mit.edu?)?
