The problem is that $fromhost is piggy-backed on the packet unique ID.
If the host address isn't in there, it's quite hard to generate a network-wide
unique ID.
[this is why it can't just be changed by the server---modifying the UID
could wreak havoc with programs waiting for responses, etc.]

I don't remember anybody suggesting that the server log (and still deliver)
bogus address 'grams.
