I won't suggest looking at the awk code, but as a program awk seems to do
*all* of the interesting frobbing you might want. A subset might be 
something to tackle.

Length isn't necessary; a lexical comparison function would do the trick
(ie. faking numbers with string lengths).

Graphical interface: (1) It has always been said that there should be
configurable buttons on each pane. (2) Sample fields (all though this is
perhaps more of a "hairy fonted cut&paste" problem). (3) How about just
doing menus of different pieces, and some way of gluing them together?
(4) Clearly there are graphical ways of representing conditionals that
are clearer than "doesmatch" or "if/then/else". (5) I'll be at MIT the
weekend of october 14, if anyone wants to hunt me down and brainstorm :-)
