If I may add my two cents worth, I think both sides are off base here.
It is not reasonable to ask a user to learn a _programming language_
just to customize the appearance of his zephyrgrams, despite what the
industry might say (q.v. PostScript). While a programming language
may make it more powerful, the base functionality should be provided
by a more intuitive description language of some kind. Neither LISP
nor C is intuitive to someone in course 4, and arguing between the two
of them is silly. Perhaps you should talk to a real user interface
expert, like Wendy Mackay (E40-366) and get her input.
