If people are using zfwrite, then they have access to the technical
skill to use a zephyr variable. ZFWRITE is wizard level, ZCTL SET is
*NOT*... Why don't you have everyone with zfwrite in their homedir
(your friends...) replace it with instructions to use zctl set???
