How do I turn on the debugging info

Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to enable our multi-homed machines to use
zephyr. How does one go about turning on maximum debugging. There seem to
be alot of debug options yet I find no where to to turn them on easily.
I did try to pass -DDEBUG through the makefile on the server portion but
that gave me errors.
Any help would be appreciated.
