You're behind the times; /usr/gcc/bin/gcc works fine in the 8.0
Solaris release.

From the original bug report:

Most likely, what happened here is that you had the x11r5 locker
attached, which has some arguably broken X libraries in it (they won't
link with anything without -lucb or something equivalent).  I believe
if you "attach openwin" instead, things should work (or if you make
sure that /usr/openwin/bin/xmkmf is in your path before
/usr/athena/bin/xmkmf), but I don't have time to test if just yet.

In the 8.1 release, the entire /mit/x11 glue layer will be gone (there
will be no /usr/athena/bin/xmkmf), so this problem will go away.
