at least in autoconf 2.10 you should be aware that the X library checks
find -lnsl on SGIs, thereby making zwgc, fer instance, quite unhappy
since it calls gethostbyname
I'm not sure what the current version of autoconf is or what a reasonable
workaround would be. for now i edited configure and noted it here and
I'll deal with it for real later
