ok ...
so what could this mean in practical terms? it has been suggested before
that i was passing zhm localhost, but i'm running it as
zhm solace.res.cmu.edu
and nslookup confirms that the name points to the correct address.
i have a friend who is having the exact same problem (also on linux) so
it's probably not some oddity of my system.
btw, i have been able to confirm that the problem is not endian.
i know i'm pressing my luck to keep asking so many questions. thanks to
those who've responded!!
