cannot find compile_et

after following the configuration suggestions and making makeconfig, I did
a make world. everything was working fine until it went to run compile_et...
the end of the make execution looked like this:

I looked in the machine-specific and general compile_et directories, and
neither of them had a binary.
any thoughts on what might be wrong here?
