Notice that these are scheduled immediately after=20
our two-day workshop, Designing the 21st=20
Century=20
Classroom. This is for the convenience of those=20
who=20
wish to attend both workshops in a 3-day period. =20
This has the advantage of connecting what you=20
learned in the first workshop to designing the=20
curriculum for service-learning, and provides travel=20
convenience as well. Get all three days and both=20
workshops in just one trip. Or, attend one of the=20
workshops in one city and attend the other workshop=20
in another city at a later date. Either way will work=20
just fine!

New Orleans Workshop
We hold two workshops per year in New Orleans, in=20
the French Quarter =96 one each spring or summer, and=20
another during the Christmas season. The French=20
Quarter is a very special place during the Christmas=20
season.
This year our workshop was scheduled to take place=20
on Dec. 1 and 2 at the Fairmont Hotel in New=20
Orleans. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, no one=20
knows whether a December workshop will be feasible=20
in New Orleans this year. There are no=20
communications within or into the city; no one knows=20
what will happen tomorrow or the next day, or how=20
long it will take for businesses to recover. Current=20
estimates on draining the city of floodwater range=20
from 14 weeks to as long as 6 months.
We are therefore going to leave the Dec. 1 and 2=20
date as it is, with the understanding that it may=20
have to be moved to a later date. This way, if=20
recovery happens more quickly, those attending the=20
workshop will still have the opportunity to enjoy the=20
Christmas environment of the French Quarter, and=20
we will be able to assist the city, and in particular,=20
the Fairmont Hotel, in maintaining needed business.
If we learn within the next two weeks that this=20
workshop has to be moved to a later date, we will=20
announce it at that time. We are unable to state an=20
alternate date at this time, since there is no way to=20
check availability with the hotel, and we would prefer=20
to work with their availability and schedule.

Update - Kids Helping Kids - Hurricane Katrina - What You Can Do
During the last two days we have had numerous=20
requests from schools wanting to know where to ship=20
the supplies their students are collecting for the=20
hurricane victims. It took a little research and a=20
couple of phone calls, but we have worked out a way=20
to help you get the supplies to the people who need=20
them in the disaster areas.
UPS, FedEx, and USPS are currently suspending=20
deliveries to these areas. Organizations such as the=20
American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, etc., are=20
not accepting supplies unless they are in huge=20
quantity of like items, palletized and shrink-wrapped. =20
So we have to get them there ourselves. And we=20

We were in the disaster areas from September 8=20
through the 11. We will be returning on a weekly=20
basis to continue delivery of food, clothing, supplies=20
and medical care for the foreseeable future. You can=20

news as much, the conditions are still very bad. =20
MANY people are still living outside in makeshift tents=20
and shelters, and they have nearly nothing. One=20
man we found was naked, hiding in the rubble that=20
used to be his house, and didn't want to come out to=20
get food. We gave him five changes of clothes and=20
two pair of shoes. He refused to go to a shelter, so=20
we helped him create a kind of camp.

for service-learning projects. Some can, and should,=20
be implemented immediately, while others are longer-
term. Both are crucial. These can be done in after-
school programs, or they can be a part of the regular=20
curriculum. The curriculum connections are there. =20

We hold two workshops per year in New Orleans, in=20
the French Quarter =96 one each spring or summer, and=20
another during the Christmas season. The French=20
Quarter is a very special place during the Christmas=20
season.

This year our workshop was scheduled to take place=20
on Dec. 1 and 2 at the Fairmont Hotel in New=20
Orleans. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, no one=20
knows whether a December workshop will be feasible=20
in New Orleans this year. There are no=20
communications within or into the city; no one knows=20
what will happen tomorrow or the next day, or how=20
long it will take for businesses to recover. Current=20
estimates on draining the city of floodwater range=20
from 14 weeks to as long as 6 months.

We are therefore going to leave the Dec. 1 and 2=20
date as it is, with the understanding that it may=20
have to be moved to a later date. This way, if=20
recovery happens more quickly, those attending the=20
workshop will still have the opportunity to enjoy the=20
Christmas environment of the French Quarter, and=20
we will be able to assist the city, and in particular,=20
the Fairmont Hotel, in maintaining needed business.

the supplies their students are collecting for the=20
hurricane victims. It took a little research and a=20
couple of phone calls, but we have worked out a way=20
to help you get the supplies to the people who need=20
them in the disaster areas.

UPS, FedEx, and USPS are currently suspending=20
deliveries to these areas. Organizations such as the=20
American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, etc., are=20
not accepting supplies unless they are in huge=20

We were in the disaster areas from September 8=20
through the 11. We will be returning on a weekly=20
basis to continue delivery of food, clothing, supplies=20
and medical care for the foreseeable future. You can=20

get food. We gave him five changes of clothes and=20
two pair of shoes. He refused to go to a shelter, so=20
we helped him create a kind of camp.
