Welcome Back to School !
Each newsletter from 21st Century Schools, LLC is=20
devoted to a particular theme. Originally, this back-
to-school edition was going to be devoted to the=20
theme of Classroom Environment =96 designing a=20
place=20
where learning thrives =96 creating the optimum=20
physical, emotional, and academic environment. In=20
view of the events of the last few days I have=20
decided to focus once again on Service-Learning,=20
and will be offering some thoughts and suggestions=20
for delivering your curriculum through the theme of=20
Hurricane Katrina and its Aftermath.
At the end of the school year in May, I had the=20
wonderful opportunity to work with the faculty of a=20
school in Mobile, Alabama, an ongoing professional=20
development and curriculum design project. Their=20
goal was to have thematic, project-based,=20
interdisciplinary units, which incorporated media=20
literacies and service-learning, ready to go when=20
school started in August. The teachers worked in=20
grade-level teams, grades K-8, to design units on a=20
variety of wonderful themes.
The Kindergarten teachers developed a unit around=20
the theme of Weather, and planned to begin=20
the=20
school year with a focus on Hurricane Preparedness. =20
Their plans for this unit included the development=20
and distribution of a multimedia Hurricane=20
Preparedness Kit and Public Service Announcements=20
on that topic.
Who knew that when school started they would=20
experience one of the worst storms in history,=20
resulting in the most catastrophic event in the=20
history of the United States?

Kids Helping Kids - Service-Learning Projects for Schools
Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is a=20
significant,=20
ongoing, historical event.
We all see the images on television of the horrible=20
loss and suffering endured by so many people. We=20
all want to do something to help. Americans, and=20
people from all over the world, have been offering=20
enormous resources. We care.
Our students care, too. And they have a real=20
emotional need to be able to take some action, to do=20
something, that will help. Listed on our web site you=20
will find some suggestions for service-learning=20
projects. Some can, and should, be implemented=20
immediately, while others are longer-term. Both are=20
crucial. These can be done in after-school=20
programs, or they can be a part of the regular=20
curriculum. The curriculum connections are there.
Please visit our web site for a comprehensive list of=20
possible service-learning projects in three=20
categories: Fundraisers, Focus on the Arts, and=20
Focus on Information.
In the meantime, please see the information below=20
for drives your school can conduct for immediate and=20
urgent needs:
What would you need if you suddenly lost everything=20
but the clothes on your back, and you were staying=20
at a hotel, a shelter, or moving into a=20
house/apartment with nothing? Students can and=20
should organize drives for these items needed=20
immediately:
Personal Care Items: soap, razors, shaving=20
cream, toothpaste, hygiene items
Toys and Books: children's story books,=20
coloring books, crayons, puzzles, any activity or toy.
Baby Care - Diapers, Baby Wipes, Infant=20
Care Items
Communications - Long Distance Calling=20
Cards, Batteries, FM Radios, Walkie-Talkies
Clothing - NEW children's and adult socks=20
and=20
underwear (not used, please)
Household - kitchen and bedding items -=20
dishes,=20
cooking implements, sheets, pillows, etc. (NEW)
Computers - NAACP of Baton Rouge is=20
requesting old computers - any kind - to provide=20
access for people needing to find family members,=20
and to connect to available resources.
Travel - donate your frequent flyer miles. =20
Contact the airline directly.
Great resources for developing service-learning=20
projects are on our web site at the link below. We=20
ask you to email us with your ideas for other projects=20
so we may add them to the list. Thank you!

Curriculum Connections - Hurricane Katrina & its Aftermath
Aside from the desire and need to assist with relief,=20
Hurricane Katrina presents an opportunity to deliver=20
our mandated curriculum standards via a vehicle that=20
is relevant, real-life, meaningful, motivational, and=20
that incorporates many 21st century skills. You will=20
find ample information, ideas and resources here to=20
design and deliver a powerful interdisciplinary,=20
project-based unit, and you can be assured that you=20
will be able to teach your required content standards=20
within this incredibly relevant and timely theme.

Portion of Proceeds to go to American Red Cross
The devastation we are witnessing as a result of=20
Hurricane Katrina has left us at 21st Century=20
Schools, LLC with a powerful commitment to assist in=20
whatever way we can. In fact, a member of our=20
staff is in Louisiana right now assisting with=20
emergency communications, medical needs, getting=20
food to people still without, animal rescues and=20
search/rescue efforts. Read about it at We Are There - Ground Zero. (http:=

We are also committed to providing whatever=20
financial assistance we can to the relief efforts. =20
Therefore, we are pledging the following to the=20

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We Are There - at Ground Zero
Like so many of you in the United States and around=20
the world we were not satisfied to only donate=20
money for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. As one=20
person said, "I didn't want to be an armchair=20
humanitarian." We really wanted to go there, be=20
there and help these people in some way. We sent=20
Jerry Self to Louisiana on Wednesday, September 7.=20
His first day in the field was September 8, and this is=20
a report of what he saw and what is still desperately=20
needed. Despite the enormous efforts and resources=20
already provided, they are not even close to making=20
a dent.
Jerry and his group (although not a member, he was=20
traveling with a large convoy from St. John Neuman=20
Catholic Church in Austin, Texas) left Austin=20
Wednesday morning; they were a group of=20
approximately 70 people traveling in a convoy of 16=20
vehicles. With his expertise as an amateur radio=20
operator,=20
a combat field surgeon in the Army, and a scuba=20
diver, Jerry volunteered to assist with emergency=20
communications in the area via amateur radio, as well=20
as offering medical assistance, search and rescue,=20
and anything else needed.
Jerry spent some time in horrific conditions in=20
Vietnam where he saw cities bombed, villages=20
destroyed, death and destruction. Thursday Jerry=20
and=20
members of his team went to New Orleans (including=20
the Superdome) and to Waveland, Mississippi. At the=20
end of his first day in the disaster areas he reported=20
that the horrific conditions he experienced in Vietnam=20
pale in comparison to the sheer enormity of the utter=20
devastation, horror, and hellish conditions and=20
suffering in the Hurricane Katrina areas.
On the first day he reported that there were still=20
thousands of people stranded, lost, hungry, ill and=20
living in inhuman conditions. Jerry assisted with=20
communications for part of the day, and by using the=20
amateur radio, was able to reunite one family who=20
had been separated during their evacuation from New=20
Orleans. A young mother with two daughters was=20
sent to the refugee center in San Antonio, Texas,=20
thinking that her husband had died in the flooding. =20
Her husband thought his wife and two daughters had=20
died, and he was sent to Phoenix, Arizona. After=20
coordinating with the American Red Cross, they were=20
all reunited later that night in Phoenix. Jerry also=20
assisted with food distribution, and helped recover=20
eight bodies. The water and mud in the area are=20
extremely toxic. Two search and rescue dogs the=20
group had taken with them died of toxic shock that=20
day.
When Jerry called the office on Friday he said, =93Some=20
of these people had so little to begin with; now they=20
literally have nothing but the clothes they=92re=20
wearing. It=92s just heartbreaking!=94
On September 9 there was more food, clothing and=20
gasoline distribution, and more recovery of bodies in=20
St.Tammany Parish.
On September 10 Jerry worked with a medical assist=20
team. His duties ranged from giving inoculations, to=20
stitching a cut foot, to locating and obtaining=20
medical supplies running in short supply.
During the past three days, thanks to the military,=20
the availability of food, water and ice has been much=20
improved, and it seems everyone has needed food. =20
There is still a huge need for everything else. For=20
example, Jerry came across a family living in a tiny=20
makeshift tent held up with sticks and ropes. Taking=20
three steps in any direction from that tent, and you=20
were in toxic muck! He found family after family=20
devastated.
There are still many homeless, and many school-age=20
children who are not in shelters and not in school. =20
What can we do about that? We are working on it,=20
and hope to hear your suggestions.
Jerry will return to Austin late Sunday=20
night, and we will be posting his observations and=20
thoughts as soon as possible after his return. We=20
will be posting additional information on our web=20
site daily.
We will be posting the photos Jerry has taken this=20
week, and additional photos will be posted as others=20
in his group send us their pictures. Jerry said that=20
what we are seeing are television is nothing=20
compared to the actual horrific devastation in=20
Mississippi and Louisiana.
We post them in hopes that they will inspire us all to=20
do more to help.
Fall Unit Themes
First and foremost on everyone's mind - nationally=20
and globally - is Hurricane Katrina. A disaster,=20
according to many, "of biblical proportions", each of=20
us has a need to do something to help.=20
Other good themes for fall include Halloween (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lt=
euobab.0.xgsavobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.=
and Science Fiction (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.ygsavobab.4pv6l7=
). War of=20
the Worlds could be a=20
separate unit, or included in Halloween and/or=20
Science Fiction, as can Harry Potter (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0=
.zgsavobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FHa=
rry_Potter.htm). While, at first glance,=20
these topics may appear to be frivolous, they each=20
provide a vehicle for some very in-depth and=20
important explorations into the disciplines. They are=20
rich in history, science, math, language arts, and the=20
arts, and provide avenues for inquiry into social=20
issues, cultures, and much more. And these themes=20
are excellent vehicles for incorporation of multimedia=20
and media literacy skills!
Frequently, yesterday's Science Fiction is today's=20
Science Fact. Science Fiction (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.ygsa=
vobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FScience=
_Fiction.htm)is an excellent theme=20
for an interdisciplinary unit, easily incorporating all=20
the disciplines, and especially lending itself to the=20
use of multimedia and media literacies in exciting=20
ways!
Disciplines that students will need in order to answer=20
the Big Questions for this theme include: =20
Astronomy, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics,=20
Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Civics, Ecology, History,=20
Geography, Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, all the=20
Language Arts (research, writing, teaching, etc.),=20
Health and PE, Social Issues, Cultures and more!
21st century skills - teaching, videography,=20
filmmaking, web design, organizing events (Science=20
Fiction Fair and/or Student Film Festival), television=20
and radio production, and even a cooking show a la=20
Alton Brown of Good Eats - sample recipes such as=20
these items served at Quark's Bar and Restaurant in=20
Another unit that you could use in fall, and that has=20
connections to Halloween and Harry Potter, is a unit=20
on Candy (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.9gsavobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=
Curriculum Design Workshop
Designing the 21st Century Classroom- a=20
two-day professional development experience in=20
designing curriculum for the 21st century.
Motivation - Students today live, learn and=20
play in a=20
media-saturated society, in a world of =93infotainment=94=20
and spectacle. For many students the curriculum is=20
not relevant, and they become disengaged from=20
learning.
Media Literacies- Rapid developments in=20
technology=20
have brought many exciting changes to life in the=20
new millennium, presenting new challenges for=20
schools. Multiple new literacies are required to=20
navigate the =93forest of signs and symbols=94 of our=20
globalized media culture. (Douglas Kellner, UCLA)
Diversity - Globalization and immigration=20
have created=20
a society of increased diversity. Old and new social=20
issues demand an informed, concerned and=20
empowered citizenry.
Standardized testing mania has made=20
meaningful curriculum an endangered species. Find=20
out why it's not an "either-or" situation - you can=20
still teach the way you know you should and your=20
kids will excel on their standardized tests! Read the=20
research!
Technologies and Multimedia - utilize these=20
21st century tools as the vehicles to implement your=20
curriculum! (Note: this is not a workshop that=20
centers on educational technologies, but centers on=20
curriculum design which incorporates, or utilizes as a=20
vehicle, these technologies in order to achieve=20
curriculum and instruction aligned to the realities of=20
the 21st century.)
Service-Learning- find out how a service-
learning=20
project can be the perfect vehicle for delivering the=20
curriculum. These projects can be designed to=20
deliver all the content standards and basic skills, AND=20
have the added bonuses of high student motivation,=20
real-life connections, media literacies, technologies=20
and multimedia. They incorporate all the vital 21st=20
century skills.
In this workshop we will address these issues, and=20
more, as you . . .
New: Service-Learning Workshop
Academics in Action - Service-Learning as 21st=20
Century Curriculum
In light of the recent events related to Hurricane=20
Katrina, now is the time to implement Service-
Learning projects in our schools.
This one-day workshop will focus on how to design=20
and implement powerful units of curriculum based on=20
meaningful service-learning projects. These projects=20
are the ultimate 21st century curriculum. They are=20
motivational, provide real-life connections to the=20
curriculum, teach the standards, build skills and=20
knowledge required for the 21st century, and meet=20
all the critical attributes of an ideal 21st century=20
curriculum. You and your students will love this=20
project, and best of all, you'll know that you are=20
making a real difference. The world is going to be a=20
better place for your efforts!
At this workshop we will explore the concept of=20
Service-Learning and examine actual examples of real=20
projects done by students. You will find answers to=20
these questions and more:
* What is Service-Learning?
* What are the components of a Service-Learning=20
project?
* How do we organize such a project?
* How do we decide what type of project to do?
* How big should this project be?
* Will this take away from the curriculum I have to=20
teach?
* Can this project be an After-School Program?
Service-Learning Workshop Schedule
* Las Vegas - November 12, 2005
* San Antonio - December 10, 2005
* New Orleans - May 5, 2006
You may wish to also attend the curriculum design=20
workshop, Designing the 21st Century Classroom,=20
which is offered on the two days prior to the Service-
Learning workshop. This is a stand-alone workshop,=20
but would have many connections if you choose to=20
attend all three days.
who=20
wish to attend both workshops in a 3-day period. =20
This has the advantage of connecting what you=20
learned in the first workshop to designing the=20
curriculum for service-learning, and provides travel=20
convenience as well. Get all three days and both=20
workshops in just one trip. Or, attend one of the=20
workshops in one city and attend the other workshop=20
in another city at a later date. Either way will work=20
just fine!
New Orleans workshop
We hold two workshops per year in New Orleans, in=20
the French Quarter =96 one each spring or summer, and=20
another during the Christmas season. The French=20
Quarter is a very special place during the Christmas=20
season.
This year our workshop was scheduled to take place=20
on Dec. 1 and 2 at the Fairmont Hotel in New=20
Orleans. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, no one=20
knows whether a December workshop will be feasible=20
in New Orleans this year. There are no=20
communications within or into the city; no one knows=20
what will happen tomorrow or the next day, or how=20
long it will take for businesses to recover. Current=20
estimates on draining the city of floodwater range=20
from 14 weeks to as long as 6 months.
We are therefore going to leave the Dec. 1 and 2=20
date as it is, with the understanding that it may=20
have to be moved to a later date. This way, if=20
recovery happens more quickly, those attending the=20
workshop will still have the opportunity to enjoy the=20
Christmas environment of the French Quarter, and=20
we will be able to assist the city, and in particular,=20
the Fairmont Hotel, in maintaining needed business.
If we learn within the next two weeks that this=20
workshop has to be moved to a later date, we will=20
announce it at that time. We are unable to state an=20
alternate date at this time, since there is no way to=20
check availability with the hotel, and we would prefer=20
to work with their availability and schedule.
Bringing the workshop to your campus has many=20
benefits. =20
* Entire staff has first-hand experience of the=20
workshop
* Collaboration among entire staff in developing=20
curriculum
* Lower cost per participant
* Lower overall costs due to savings on teacher=20
travel, hotel, meals, etc.
* Participants have immediate access to resource=20
Cooking Show - a Multimedia Project
Over the past few months, while examining a variety=20
of=20
themes, I have discovered that a multimedia project=20
of a Cooking Show (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.hhsavobab.4pv6l7n=
6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FCooking_Show.htm)fit=
s very well into=20
numerous themes. For example, we all know that=20
New Orleans is popularly know for its fabulous Creole=20
and Cajun foods, gumbo, jambalaya, seafood, cafe=20
au lait, King cakes, and more. If you are doing a unit=20
on the theme of Hurricane Katrina and its=20
Aftermath (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.vgsavobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&=
p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stCenturySchools.com%2FHurricane_Katrina.htm),=20
it would necessarily include a study of the culture of=20
New Orleans. Food is a big part of their unique=20
culture. A cooking show on Creole and Cajun food=20
would be an excellent part of this unit, providing=20
students with experience in multimedia, and=20
developing their media literacy skills.
If you are doing a unit on Candy (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.9gs=
avobab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FCandy.=
htm), then create a=20
candy cooking show. Let the kids create recipes,=20
share their favorite oldies, and interview community=20
members and grandparents for their favorite candies=20
and recipes. Just think of all the great chocolate=20
recipes you could include!
If you are doing a Halloween (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.xgsavob=
ab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FHalloween.=
htm) unit, you could create a=20
cooking show using special Halloween and fall=20
recipes. For example, I saw a web page with=20
=20
Halloween recipes (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.ihsavobab.4pv6l7n=
6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.britta.com%2FHW%2FHWr.html)for Awful Arachnid=
s, Eerie=20
Eyeballs,=20
Freaky Witches' Fingers, Brittle Meringue Bones,=20
Savory Brain Shrimp Spread, Pumpkin Pie, Deviled=20
Eggs, Decayed Corpse Chips with Entrail Salsa, Spicy=20
Bat Wings, Dried Cherry Scabs, Tooth Decay Fodder,=20
Oddly Orange Oreos and more really fun recipes!
=20
Quark's Restaurant (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.jhsavobab.4pv6l7n=
6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.startrekexp.com%2Frestaurant.php) in Las Vega=
s gives us some=20
ideas if you are doing a unit on Science Fiction, War=20
of the Worlds or Harry Potter. You can purchase=20
Quark's menus which include items such as=20
Hamborger, the Wrap of Kahn, Tribble Tenders, and=20
more fun dishes.
This project incorporates many disciplines and vital=20
21st century skills. Kids learn how media messages=20
are constructed. In addition to the content of the=20
disciplines, they will learn videography, presentation=20
skills, editing, composing, special effects, animation,=20
voiceover and music application techniques, and=20
much=20
more. It is highly motivational, and I strongly=20
recommend this project for all grade levels. =20
this idea and its curriculum benefits . . .
Welcome Back to School !
</p>
=20
<p >
Each newsletter from 21st Century Schools, LLC is=20
devoted to a particular theme. Originally, this back-
to-school edition was going to be devoted to the=20
theme of <i>Classroom Environment </i>=96 designing a=20
place=20
where learning thrives =96 creating the optimum=20
physical, emotional, and academic environment. In=20
view of the events of the last few days I have=20
decided to focus once again on Service-Learning,=20
and will be offering some thoughts and suggestions=20
for delivering your curriculum through the theme of=20
<i>Hurricane Katrina and its Aftermath</i>.
</p>
=20
<p >
At the end of the school year in May, I had the=20
wonderful opportunity to work with the faculty of a=20
school in Mobile, Alabama, an ongoing professional=20
development and curriculum design project. Their=20
goal was to have thematic, project-based,=20
interdisciplinary units, which incorporated media=20
literacies and service-learning, ready to go when=20
school started in August. The teachers worked in=20
grade-level teams, grades K-8, to design units on a=20
variety of wonderful themes.
</p>
=20
<p >
The Kindergarten teachers developed a unit around=20
the theme of <i>Weather</i>, and planned to begin=20
the=20
school year with a focus on Hurricane Preparedness. =20
Their plans for this unit included the development=20
and distribution of a multimedia Hurricane=20
Preparedness Kit and Public Service Announcements=20
on that topic.
</p>
=20
<p >
Who knew that when school started they would=20
experience one of the worst storms in history,=20
resulting in the most catastrophic event in the=20
history of the United States?
<p >
Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is a=20
<i><b>significant</i>,=20
<i>ongoing</i>, <i>historical event</b></i>.
</p>
=20
<p >
We all see the images on television of the horrible=20
loss and suffering endured by so many people. We=20
all want to do something to help. Americans, and=20
people from all over the world, have been offering=20
enormous resources. We care.
</p>
=20
<p >
Our students care, too. And they have a real=20
emotional need to be able to take some action, to do=20
something, that will help. Listed on our web site you=20
will find some suggestions for service-learning=20
projects. Some can, and should, be implemented=20
immediately, while others are longer-term. Both are=20
crucial. These can be done in after-school=20
programs, or they can be a part of the regular=20
curriculum. The curriculum connections are there.
</p>
=20
<p >
Please visit our web site for a comprehensive list of=20
possible service-learning projects in three=20
categories: Fundraisers, Focus on the Arts, and=20
Focus on Information.
</p>
=20
<p >
In the meantime, please see the information below=20
for drives your school can conduct for immediate and=20
urgent needs:
</p>
=20
<p >
What would you need if you suddenly lost everything=20
but the clothes on your back, and you were staying=20
at a hotel, a shelter, or moving into a=20
house/apartment with nothing? Students can and=20
should organize drives for these items needed=20
immediately:
Aside from the desire and need to assist with relief,=20
Hurricane Katrina presents an opportunity to deliver=20
our mandated curriculum standards via a vehicle that=20
is relevant, real-life, meaningful, motivational, and=20
that incorporates many 21st century skills. You will=20
find ample information, ideas and resources here to=20
design and deliver a powerful interdisciplinary,=20
project-based unit, and you can be assured that you=20
will be able to teach your required content standards=20
within this incredibly relevant and timely theme.
<p >
Like so many of you in the United States and around=20
the world we were not satisfied to only donate=20
money for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. As one=20
person said, "I didn't want to be an armchair=20
humanitarian." We really wanted to go there, be=20
there and help these people in some way. We sent=20
Jerry Self to Louisiana on Wednesday, September 7.=20
His first day in the field was September 8, and this is=20
a report of what he saw and what is still desperately=20
needed. Despite the enormous efforts and resources=20
already provided, they are not even close to making=20
a dent.
</p>
=20
<p >
Jerry and his group (although not a member, he was=20
traveling with a large convoy from St. John Neuman=20
Catholic Church in Austin, Texas) left Austin=20
Wednesday morning; they were a group of=20
approximately 70 people traveling in a convoy of 16=20
vehicles. With his expertise as an amateur radio=20
operator,=20
a combat field surgeon in the Army, and a scuba=20
diver, Jerry volunteered to assist with emergency=20
communications in the area via amateur radio, as well=20
as offering medical assistance, search and rescue,=20
and anything else needed.
</p>
=20
<p >
Jerry spent some time in horrific conditions in=20
Vietnam where he saw cities bombed, villages=20
destroyed, death and destruction. Thursday Jerry=20
and=20
members of his team went to New Orleans (including=20
the Superdome) and to Waveland, Mississippi. At the=20
end of his first day in the disaster areas he reported=20
that the horrific conditions he experienced in Vietnam=20
pale in comparison to the sheer enormity of the utter=20
devastation, horror, and hellish conditions and=20
suffering in the Hurricane Katrina areas.
</p>
=20
<p >
On the first day he reported that there were still=20
thousands of people stranded, lost, hungry, ill and=20
living in inhuman conditions. Jerry assisted with=20
communications for part of the day, and by using the=20
amateur radio, was able to reunite one family who=20
had been separated during their evacuation from New=20
Orleans. A young mother with two daughters was=20
sent to the refugee center in San Antonio, Texas,=20
thinking that her husband had died in the flooding. =20
Her husband thought his wife and two daughters had=20
died, and he was sent to Phoenix, Arizona. After=20
coordinating with the American Red Cross, they were=20
all reunited later that night in Phoenix. Jerry also=20
assisted with food distribution, and helped recover=20
eight bodies. The water and mud in the area are=20
extremely toxic. Two search and rescue dogs the=20
group had taken with them died of toxic shock that=20
day.
</p>
=20
<p >
When Jerry called the office on Friday he said, =93Some=20
of these people had so little to begin with; now they=20
literally have nothing but the clothes they=92re=20
wearing. It=92s just heartbreaking!=94
</p>
=20
<p >
On September 9 there was more food, clothing and=20
gasoline distribution, and more recovery of bodies in=20
St.Tammany Parish.
</p>
=20
<p >
On September 10 Jerry worked with a medical assist=20
team. His duties ranged from giving inoculations, to=20
stitching a cut foot, to locating and obtaining=20
medical supplies running in short supply.
</p>
=20
<p >
During the past three days, thanks to the military,=20
the availability of food, water and ice has been much=20
improved, and it seems everyone has needed food. =20
There is still a huge need for everything else. For=20
example, Jerry came across a family living in a tiny=20
makeshift tent held up with sticks and ropes. Taking=20
three steps in any direction from that tent, and you=20
were in toxic muck! He found family after family=20
devastated.
</p>
=20
<p >
There are still many homeless, and many school-age=20
children who are not in shelters and not in school. =20
What can we do about that? We are working on it,=20
and hope to hear your suggestions.
</p>
=20
<p >
Jerry will return to Austin late Sunday=20
night, and we will be posting his observations and=20
thoughts as soon as possible after his return. We=20
will be posting additional information on our web=20
site daily.
</p>
=20
<p >
We will be posting the photos Jerry has taken this=20
week, and additional photos will be posted as others=20
in his group send us their pictures. Jerry said that=20
what we are seeing are television is nothing=20
compared to the actual horrific devastation in=20
Mississippi and Louisiana.
We post them in hopes that they will inspire us all to=20
do more to help.
<p >
<b>Designing the 21st Century Classroom</b>- a=20
two-day professional development experience in=20
designing curriculum for the 21st century.
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Motivation</i> - Students today live, learn and=20
play in a=20
media-saturated society, in a world of =93infotainment=94=20
and spectacle. For many students the curriculum is=20
not relevant, and they become disengaged from=20
learning.
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Media Literacies</i>- Rapid developments in=20
technology=20
have brought many exciting changes to life in the=20
new millennium, presenting new challenges for=20
schools. Multiple new literacies are required to=20
navigate the =93forest of signs and symbols=94 of our=20
globalized media culture. (Douglas Kellner, UCLA)
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Diversity</i> - Globalization and immigration=20
have created=20
a society of increased diversity. Old and new social=20
issues demand an informed, concerned and=20
empowered citizenry.
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Standardized testing mania</i> has made=20
meaningful curriculum an endangered species. Find=20
out why it's not an "either-or" situation - you can=20
still teach the way you know you should and your=20
kids will excel on their standardized tests! Read the=20
research!
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Technologies and Multimedia</i> - utilize these=20
21st century tools as the vehicles to implement your=20
curriculum! (Note: this is not a workshop that=20
centers on educational technologies, but centers on=20
curriculum design which incorporates, or utilizes as a=20
vehicle, these technologies in order to achieve=20
curriculum and instruction aligned to the realities of=20
the 21st century.)
</p>
=20
<p >
<i>Service-Learning</i>- find out how a service-
learning=20
project can be the perfect vehicle for delivering the=20
curriculum. These projects can be designed to=20
deliver all the content standards and basic skills, AND=20
have the added bonuses of high student motivation,=20
real-life connections, media literacies, technologies=20
and multimedia. They incorporate all the vital 21st=20
century skills.
</p>
=20
<p >
In this workshop we will address these issues, and=20
more, as you . . .
</p>
<b>Academics in Action - Service-Learning as 21st=20
Century Curriculum</b>
</p>
=20
<p >
In light of the recent events related to Hurricane=20
Katrina, now is the time to implement Service-
Learning projects in our schools.
</p>
=20
<p >
This one-day workshop will focus on how to design=20
and implement powerful units of curriculum based on=20
meaningful service-learning projects. These projects=20
are the ultimate 21st century curriculum. They are=20
motivational, provide real-life connections to the=20
curriculum, teach the standards, build skills and=20
knowledge required for the 21st century, and meet=20
all the critical attributes of an ideal 21st century=20
curriculum. You and your students will love this=20
project, and best of all, you'll know that you are=20
making a real difference. The world is going to be a=20
better place for your efforts!
</p>
=20
<p >
At this workshop we will explore the concept of=20
Service-Learning and examine actual examples of real=20
projects done by students. You will find answers to=20
these questions and more:
<ol>
<li>What is Service-Learning?</li>
<li>What are the components of a Service-Learning=20
project?</li>
<li>How do we organize such a project?</li>
<li>How do we decide what type of project to do?
</li>
<li>How big should this project be?</li>
<li>Will this take away from the curriculum I have to=20
teach?</li>
<li>Can this project be an After-School Program?</li>
</ol>
</p>
=20
<p >
Service-Learning Workshop Schedule
<ol>
<li>Las Vegas - November 12, 2005</li>
<li>San Antonio - December 10, 2005</li>
<li>New Orleans - May 5, 2006</li>
</ol>
</p>
=20
<p >
You may wish to also attend the curriculum design=20
workshop, Designing the 21st Century Classroom,=20
which is offered on the two days prior to the Service-
Learning workshop. This is a stand-alone workshop,=20
but would have many connections if you choose to=20
attend all three days.
Notice that these are scheduled immediately after=20
our two-day workshop, <i>Designing the 21st=20
Century=20
Classroom</i>. This is for the convenience of those=20
who=20
wish to attend both workshops in a 3-day period. =20
This has the advantage of connecting what you=20
learned in the first workshop to designing the=20
curriculum for service-learning, and provides travel=20
convenience as well. Get all three days and both=20
workshops in just one trip. Or, attend one of the=20
workshops in one city and attend the other workshop=20
in another city at a later date. Either way will work=20
just fine!
<p >
We hold two workshops per year in New Orleans, in=20
the French Quarter =96 one each spring or summer, and=20
another during the Christmas season. The French=20
Quarter is a very special place during the Christmas=20
season.
</p>
=20
<p >
This year our workshop was scheduled to take place=20
on Dec. 1 and 2 at the Fairmont Hotel in New=20
Orleans. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, no one=20
knows whether a December workshop will be feasible=20
in New Orleans this year. There are no=20
communications within or into the city; no one knows=20
what will happen tomorrow or the next day, or how=20
long it will take for businesses to recover. Current=20
estimates on draining the city of floodwater range=20
from 14 weeks to as long as 6 months.
</p>
=20
<p >
We are therefore going to leave the Dec. 1 and 2=20
date as it is, with the understanding that it may=20
have to be moved to a later date. This way, if=20
recovery happens more quickly, those attending the=20
workshop will still have the opportunity to enjoy the=20
Christmas environment of the French Quarter, and=20
we will be able to assist the city, and in particular,=20
the Fairmont Hotel, in maintaining needed business.
</p>
=20
<p >
If we learn within the next two weeks that this=20
workshop has to be moved to a later date, we will=20
announce it at that time. We are unable to state an=20
alternate date at this time, since there is no way to=20
check availability with the hotel, and we would prefer=20
to work with their availability and schedule.
Over the past few months, while examining a variety=20
of=20
themes, I have discovered that a multimedia project=20
of a <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.hhsavobab.4pv6l7n6.20=
7966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FCooking_Show.htm">Cookin=
g Show </a>fits very well into=20
numerous themes. For example, we all know that=20
New Orleans is popularly know for its fabulous Creole=20
and Cajun foods, gumbo, jambalaya, seafood, cafe=20
au lait, King cakes, and more. If you are doing a unit=20
on the theme of <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0.vgsavobab.=
4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stCenturySchools.com%2FHurricane_Kat=
rina.htm"><i>Hurricane Katrina and its=20
Aftermath</i></a>,=20
it would necessarily include a study of the culture of=20
New Orleans. Food is a big part of their unique=20
culture. A cooking show on Creole and Cajun food=20
would be an excellent part of this unit, providing=20
students with experience in multimedia, and=20
developing their media literacy skills.
</p>
=20
<p >
If you are doing a unit on <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lt=
candy cooking show. Let the kids create recipes,=20
share their favorite oldies, and interview community=20
members and grandparents for their favorite candies=20
and recipes. Just think of all the great chocolate=20
recipes you could include!
</p>
=20
<p >
If you are doing a <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D4lteuobab.0=
cooking show using special Halloween and fall=20
recipes. For example, I saw a web page with=20
Quark's Restaurant</a> in Las Vegas gives us some=20
ideas if you are doing a unit on Science Fiction, War=20
This project incorporates many disciplines and vital=20
21st century skills. Kids learn how media messages=20
are constructed. In addition to the content of the=20
disciplines, they will learn videography, presentation=20
skills, editing, composing, special effects, animation,=20
voiceover and music application techniques, and=20
much=20
more. It is highly motivational, and I strongly=20
recommend this project for all grade levels. =20
