Designing the 21st

workshop to attend if you would like to offer your
class a fantastic new interdisciplinary, thematic unit
that will inspire your students and dramatically
increase their learning. If you are frustrated by a lack
of student motivation and engagement; if you are
tired of endless worksheets and doing nothing but
drilling kids for standardized tests, this is the
workshop for you.
You do not have to be afraid that taking the time to
develop and implement a curriculum that is
meaningful to your students, connected to their
experiences and lives, and fun will cause your
students' test scores to drop. On the contrary, a
growing body of research shows us they will improve!
Participants will actively collaborate in the design of
curriculum utilizing particular classroom strategies.
This workshop is appropriate for all K-12 teachers,
principals, curriculum directors and staff development
specialists. It is also appropriate for university
professors of education.
If you are a Smaller Learning Communities Facilitator,
or a 21st Century Community Program Director, this
workshop is for you!
Education in the new millennium offers many
challenges as well as possibilities. Issues such as
student motivation, multiple literacies, media
literacies, standardized testing mania, and the use of
technologies and multimedia as vehicles for
implementation of the curriculum will be addressed.

Selecting and Developing Your Theme
A few months ago I conducted an extensive review
of available books on interdisciplinary curriculum.
The best one, in my opinion, is The
Interdisciplinary Teacher's Handbook - Integrated
Teaching Across the Curriculum by Stephen
Tchudi and Stephen Lafer. It was published in 1996,
so it doesn't have a lot about use of the Internet,
but it is packed with excellent ideas for curriculum
design. They offer their list of Qualities of Good
Themes.
* Good themes cause students to generate
interesting questions and to pose intriguing
problems.
* The questions students raise in response to good
themes provoke thought and, inevitably, thought
about the thought processes, or metacognition.
* Good themes help students discover
that "what they
know" and "what they know how to do" is
pertinent to
finding answers to questions and problems themes
raise.
* The questions and problems posed by good
themes lead to thought that eventually leads to
exploration.
* Good themes create a need and a desire for
disciplinary and interdisciplinary skill and
knowledge.
* Good themes cause students to seek and apply
disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge and
skill.
* Good themes provide intellectual goals that cause
learners to naturally encounter the whys of the
disciplines.
* Good themes naturally lead to interdisciplinary
inquiry.
* Good themes build strong communities of
learners.
* Good themes promote cooperation.
Good themes, simply stated, generate questions that
students are interested in having answered. They
lead into exploration that creates a need for the
good things the disciplines have to offer.

A few months ago I conducted an extensive review=20
of available books on interdisciplinary curriculum. =20
The best one, in my opinion, is <i>The=20
Interdisciplinary Teacher's Handbook - Integrated=20
Teaching Across the Curriculum </i>by Stephen=20
Tchudi and Stephen Lafer. It was published in 1996,=20
so it doesn't have a lot about use of the Internet,=20
but it is packed with excellent ideas for curriculum=20
design. They offer their list of Qualities of Good=20
Themes.

<li>Good themes cause students to generate=20
interesting questions and to pose intriguing=20
problems.</li>
<li>The questions students raise in response to good=20
themes provoke thought and, inevitably, thought=20
about the thought processes, or metacognition.</li>
<li>Good themes help students discover=20
that "<i>what they=20
know</i>" and "<i>what they know how to do</i>" is=20
pertinent to=20
finding answers to questions and problems themes=20
raise.</li>
<li>The questions and problems posed by good=20
themes lead to thought that eventually leads to=20
exploration.</li>
<li>Good themes create a need and a desire for=20
disciplinary and interdisciplinary skill and=20
knowledge.</li>
<li>Good themes cause students to seek and apply=20
disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge and=20
skill.</li>
<li>Good themes provide intellectual goals that cause=20
learners to naturally encounter the whys of the=20
disciplines.</li>
<li>Good themes naturally lead to interdisciplinary=20
inquiry.</li>
<li>Good themes build strong communities of=20
learners.</li>
<li>Good themes promote cooperation.</li>
