Professional Staff Development and Curriculum Design
May 2005

Summer Professional Development

The 2004-05 school year is almost at an end, and we
are now looking forward to the simple pleasures of
summer. Many educators enjoy taking a trip to a fun
location for some professional staff development.
Our workshop, Designing the 21st
Century Classroom (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.kdvnn7n6.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FDesigning_21st_Century_Classroom.htm), can have you ready to go
with a fabulous curriculum unit when school starts
again next fall! Please join us this summer for some
learning and some fun (some fun learning!) in one of
the great summer cities listed below.

Ham Radio (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.aauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FHam_Radio.htm)- In addition to information on
summer professional staff development, this
newsletter includes some interesting resources for
those of you who may be interested in adding the fun
of ham radio to your curriculum! Check out the links
and resources in the newsletter below!

Media Literacy (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.bauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FMedia_Literacy.htm) - this summer would
be a great time to begin taking a look at one of the
most important literacies of the 21st century. We
live in a media-saturated society. The media have a
huge impact on our lives, effecting everything from
how we dress and what we eat to how we vote, and
even to what we believe about who we are. Our
students must be able to analyze, interpret, evaluate
and create media messages. Follow the link above
for more information on media literacy and how you
can bring it to your students.

I hope you enjoy the information presented in this
brief newsletter, and wish you a wonderful summer! I
sincerely hope to see you at one of our workshops
this summer. And don't forget that we do bring our
professional development to schools! (See On-Site (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.pdvnn7n6.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FOn-Site.htm)) We can bring
your district or campus a comprehensive curriculum
and instruction program, or we can bring you an
introductory workshop on designing interdisciplinary
curriculum! Please contact us, and have a wonderful
summer!

Sincerely,

Anne Shaw

* Media Literacy

In last month's newsletter we discussed the
importance and benefits of adding Service-Learning (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.a55lldbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FService-Learning.htm)to the
curricuum. This month we take another step toward
our 21st century authentic curriculum by addressing
the topic of media literacy (just one of many
important literacies required in the 21st century).

Media Literacy (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.bauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FMedia_Literacy.htm) - because we now
live in a
media-saturated 21st century society, media literacy
has become a critical facet of an authentic, 21st
century curriculum. (See our list of Critical Attributes of Curriculum (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.cauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FCritical_Attributes.htm)).
However, media literacy as a topic is relatively new in
the United States. When I began my intensive
research on media literacy about 4 years ago, I found
that nearly all the available information was from
Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New
Zealand. Almost no one in the United States seemed
interested in, or wrote about, or practiced/taught
media literacy.

For this reason, most educators haven't really
thought much about media literacy, and even when
they do, they have no idea how to teach it.
However, there is a growing interest in this topic in
the United States, and we have a growing body of
resources, as well. Follow this link to Media Literacy
for some excellent online resources, beginning with
some basic definitions of the term "media literacy." I
recommend that you begin to acquaint yourself with
the concept of media literacy, and that you integrate
it into your curriculum where you can. Many of these
links offer sample lesson plans that are easy to
incorporate into your curriculum.

Students who are not motivated are not engaged.
Students not engaged are not learning. By attending
our workshop on curriculum design, you will begin to
incorporate these skills and technologies into your
own interdisciplinary curriculum design and
instruction. After you design this curriculum and take
it back to your classroom you will find that your
students are highly engaged and motivated.

I know that with the NCLB, a majority of our K-12
educators feel they have a gun to the head to
drill their students on the basics of content and
skills. What you will find is that students can use
technologies and media literacy skills to learn many of
their content standards and skills, only to a much
high level. AND, as an added bonus, they will
understand what they have learned, connect it to
their experiences and lives, use it, and remember it.
In other words, authentic learning will be taking
place. The research shows us that when that
happens, students will perform better on their standardized tests. (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.dauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FStandardized_Testing.htm)

Attend our workshop to learn how to incorporate
these technologies, skills, and literacies into a
curriculum that is relevant, connected, meaningful,
engaging, demanding and successful.

Curriculum Design Workshops

Designing the 21st
Century Classroom (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.kdvnn7n6.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FDesigning_21st_Century_Classroom.htm)is the
workshop to attend if you would like to offer your
class a fantastic new interdisciplinary, thematic unit
that will inspire your students and dramatically
increase their learning. If you are frustrated by a lack
of student motivation and engagement; if you are
tired of endless worksheets and doing nothing but
drilling kids for standardized tests, this is the
workshop for you.

You do not have to be afraid that taking the time to
develop and implement a curriculum that is meaningful
to your students, connected to their experiences and
lives, and fun will cause your students' test scores to
drop. On the contrary, a growing body of research
shows us they will improve!

Participants will actively collaborate in the design of
curriculum utilizing particular classroom strategies.

This workshop is appropriate for all K-12 teachers,
principals, curriculum directors and staff development
specialists. It is also appropriate for university
professors of education.

If you are a Smaller Learning Communities Facilitator,
or a 21st Century Community Program Director, this
workshop is for you!

Education in the new millennium offers many
challenges as well as possibilities. Issues such as
student motivation, multiple literacies, media
literacies, standardized testing mania, and the use of
technologies and multimedia as vehicles for
implementation of the curriculum will be addressed.

Go to the link below for the entire workshop
description, including specifics on What You'll Learn,
What You'll Do, and What You'll Take With You!

See our Workshop Schedule (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.ldvnn7n6.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FWorkshop_Schedule.htm)online for
dates of summer workshops in Orlando, New Orleans,

* 2005 Summer Schedule

Summer 2005
Cities and Dates

The hardest part will be selecting which city you wish
to visit when you attend this workshop. Not only will
you have an excellent professional development
experience, you will have the opportunity to take
advantage of the special things to see and do in
each city.

Whether it's Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, or
driving a NASCAR racecar, you'll have loads of fun in
Orlando! Click on the links at our Orlando page to
find out how much more there is to see and do. Join
us in Orlando on June 9 and 10 (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.eywum9aab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FOrlando.htm).

We'll be staying in the French Quarter when we go to
New Orleans. From Bourbon Street to the new D-Day
Museum, you'll love the food, the music, the history,
the architecture . . . the French Quarter is a world all
it's own. Follow the links on our New Orleans page
for more on all the wonderful things you'll enjoy in New Orleans on June 23 and 24! (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.fywum9aab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FNew_Orleans.htm)

The famous Riverwalk is where we'll be staying in San
Antonio. Just walk out the door and stroll down the
magnificently beautiful Riverwalk, or step into a "river
taxi" and tour on the water. The Alamo is just across
the street. Join us in San Antonio on June 30 and July 1! (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.gywum9aab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FSan_Antonio.htm)

You must go to the links on Branson to see how much
there is to do. It's a spectacular vacation spot with
something for everyone, including the children. I
personally recommend that you visit Silver Dollar City
and tour Talking Rocks Cavern. Make your
reservations for Branson early! Come to Branson, MO on July 7 and 8! (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.hywum9aab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FBranson.htm)

Las Vegas strip to Hoover Dam, Las Vegas is a great
place to attend a workshop. Join us in Las Vegas on July 14 and 15! (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=lasfxhbab.0.iywum9aab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschools.com%2FLas_Vegas.htm)

In last month's newsletter we discussed the=20
importance and benefits of adding <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3Dlasf=

om%2FService-Learning.htm">Service-Learning </a>to the=20
curricuum. This month we take another step toward=20
our 21st century authentic curriculum by addressing=20
the topic of media literacy (just one of many=20
important literacies required in the 21st century).
        </p>

m">Media Literacy</a> - because we now=20
live in a =20
media-saturated 21st century society, media literacy=20
has become a critical facet of an authentic, 21st=20
century curriculum. (See our list of <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=3D=
lasfxhbab.0.cauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcenturyschoo=
ls.com%2FCritical_Attributes.htm">Critical Attributes of Curriculum</a>). =
=20
However, media literacy as a topic is relatively new in=20
the United States. When I began my intensive=20
research on media literacy about 4 years ago, I found=20
that nearly all the available information was from=20
Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New=20
Zealand. Almost no one in the United States seemed=20
interested in, or wrote about, or practiced/taught=20
media literacy.
            </p>
       =20
            <p >
For this reason, most educators haven't really=20
thought much about media literacy, and even when=20
they do, they have no idea how to teach it. =20
However, there is a growing interest in this topic in=20
the United States, and we have a growing body of=20
resources, as well. Follow this link to Media Literacy=20
for some excellent online resources, beginning with=20
some basic definitions of the term "media literacy." I=20
recommend that you begin to acquaint yourself with=20
the concept of media literacy, and that you integrate=20
it into your curriculum where you can. Many of these=20
links offer sample lesson plans that are easy to=20
incorporate into your curriculum.
            </p>
       =20
            <p >
Students who are not motivated are not engaged. =20
Students not engaged are not learning. By attending=20
our workshop on curriculum design, you will begin to=20
incorporate these skills and technologies into your=20
own interdisciplinary curriculum design and=20
instruction. After you design this curriculum and take=20
it back to your classroom you will find that your=20
students are highly engaged and motivated.
            </p>
       =20
            <p >
I know that with the NCLB, a majority of our K-12=20
educators feel they have a gun to the head to=20
drill their students on the basics of content and=20
skills. What you will find is that students can use=20
technologies and media literacy skills to learn many of=20
their content standards and skills, only to a much=20
high level. AND, as an added bonus, they will=20
understand what they have learned, connect it to=20
their experiences and lives, use it, and remember it. =20
In other words, authentic learning will be taking=20
place. The research shows us that when that=20
happens, students will perform better on their <a href=3D"http://rs6.net/tn=
.jsp?t=3Dlasfxhbab.0.dauouhbab.4pv6l7n6.207966&p=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.21stcen=

these technologies, skills, and literacies into a=20

engaging, demanding and successful.

Century Classroom </a>is the=20
workshop to attend if you would like to offer your=20
class a fantastic new interdisciplinary, thematic unit=20
that will inspire your students and dramatically=20
increase their learning. If you are frustrated by a lack=20
of student motivation and engagement; if you are=20
tired of endless worksheets and doing nothing but=20
drilling kids for standardized tests, this is the=20
workshop for you.

            <p >
You do not have to be afraid that taking the time to=20
develop and implement a curriculum that is meaningful=20
to your students, connected to their experiences and=20
lives, and fun will cause your students' test scores to=20
drop. On the contrary, a growing body of research=20
shows us they will improve!

Participants will actively collaborate in the design of=20

This workshop is appropriate for all K-12 teachers,=20
