Years ago, I had the privilege of witnessing sea turtles hatch on a beach on an island off the coast of South Carolina. I remember feeling so lucky that I got to witness these tiny, delicate animals crack open their shells, tunnel up to the beach's surface and head instinctively toward the ocean - the sea turtle equivalent of seeing a child's first steps.
But sea turtles in other parts of the world are one of the species currently being threatened by higher global temperatures resulting from climate change. Warmer weather in Panama means sea turtle eggs are frying on the beach before the turtles hatch. I was outraged and upset when I learned about this - although I'm glad to be aware of it, thanks to my colleague, Truthout staff reporter Dahr Jamail.
