Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently gained the endorsement of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, which is the intellectual equivalent of a car accident getting endorsed by a bowl of lukewarm porridge.
Palin's speech was a masterpiece of gibberish verging on performance art; at one point, she demanded that the US stop paying for "squirmishes" in the Middle East. It was like a zen koan: It literally stopped my mind.
Donald Trump and Sarah Palin may seem like some kind of recent phenomenon, but the fact is we have had people like this with us since time out of mind. They are the carnival barkers running a rigged game at the town fair, the butcher with his thumb on the scale, the tent revivalist selling salvation via snake oil. I understand the argument for ignoring them, but here's the problem: The moment you take your eyes off people like Trump and Palin is the moment they steal the furniture, or the future, right out from under you.
