From my first few weeks as a copy editor at Truthout, I knew this job was going to offer more than a paycheck.
My role is one small part of a journalistic mission to counter oppressive, corporate news narratives and provide space to voices that too often get shut out. After more than a year working on the Truthout team, I continue to be impressed by this organization's professional and editorial standards.
As one of Truthout's copy editors, I'm tasked with more than just ensuring that our stories are free of spelling errors, grammar mistakes and style inconsistencies. We're committed to never using inaccurate euphemisms that benefit those in power - we call torture "torture." And we've developed our style guide to make sure the language we use is fair and respectful to LGBTQ people, immigrants, people with disabilities, and other marginalized communities.
