I once met a newspaper reporter who refused to vote as a matter of professional principle. It's about objectivity, he told me, explaining that voting creates attachment, and journalists need to stay detached from all things in order to be "objective."
What about deeper forms of political engagement, such as participation in social movements? Forget it, he replied. Participation in any struggle would distort a journalist's objectivity beyond repair.
Varying shades of this mindset pervade a disturbing majority of newsrooms. The idea of journalism as a tool for exposing injustice has fallen away, leaving an exaltation of apathy.
