t r u t h o u t | Can justice be found at the Supreme Court? Rarely, says Ian Millhiser, whose book "Injustices" chronicles the role the highest legal authority in the United States played historically in paving the way for Jim Crow laws, compelling child labor in coal mines and cotton mills, and, more recently, dismantling legal protections for workers and campaign finance regulation.
Can it be found in our criminal legal system? Not according to Bryan Stephenson, who draws on his own direct experience as a defense attorney in the compelling and highly recommended "Just Mercy."
Justice can't be found for most working women at their jobs - where discrimination, harassment and denial of basic benefits and labor rights are still rife, as revealed in Caroline Fredrickson's Under The Bus. Indeed, justice is nowhere to be found in the whole system of neoliberal capitalism and corporate state power that dominates today in the United States and beyond - a system that is studiously taken apart by Brad Evans and Henry Giroux in their new book "Disposable Futures."
But as ever, Truthout's Progressive Picks don't just chronicle the dire injustices that need to be addressed. All these titles also propose solutions - and "Sixteen for '16", Salvatore Babones' manifesto for a truly progressive political platform, is devoted to them!

Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted
By Ian Millhiser
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6694/t/17304/shop/item.jsp?storefront_KEY=661&t=&store_item_KEY=3036
Few institutions have inflicted greater suffering on ordinary people throughout the history of the United States than the Supreme Court. Attorney Ian Millhiser has written a scathing indictment of how SCOTUS has undermined our rights and facilitated the creation of an oligarchy, comforting the comfortable and afflicting the afflicted.
Disposable Futures: The Seduction of Violence in the Age of Spectacle
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6694/t/17304/shop/item.jsp?storefront_KEY=661&t=&store_item_KEY=3048
By Brad Evans and Henry A. Giroux
How does neoliberalism hold us back from participating in civic life? In "Disposable Futures", Brad Evans and Henry A. Giroux, both renowned educators, public intellectuals and Truthout contributors, analyze how today's dominant economic system uses privatization, mass media and the spectacle of violence to neutralize and control the public.
Under the Bus: How Working Women Are Being Run Over
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6694/t/17304/shop/item.jsp?storefront_KEY=661&t=&store_item_KEY=3050
By Caroline Fredrickson
Does gender equity exist in the American workplace? Under the Bus explodes the notion that women are holding themselves back by not "leaning in." This book is concerned with women who have been failed by their workplaces and the economy: temporary and part-time workers, farmworkers, small business employees, domestic workers and more.
Sixteen for '16: A Progressive Agenda for a Better America
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6694/t/17304/shop/item.jsp?storefront_KEY=661&t=&store_item_KEY=3037
By Salvatore Babones
Given that the next US presidential race looks set to be as unedifying a spectacle as ever, we might wonder what a truly progressive election platform would look like? Frequent Truthout contributor Salvatore Babones outlines 16 core principles for a more hopeful vision of the United States.
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6694/t/17304/shop/item.jsp?storefront_KEY=661&t=&store_item_KEY=3039
By Bryan Stevenson
Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and a professor at NYU, makes a detailed, compelling and personal case that prisons in the United States are filled with victims of injustice. "Just Mercy" is both an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer's coming of age and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.
