In the winter of 1978, my mother took me on a trip to Florida. It was the f=
irst vacation she had enjoyed in years and it lasted precisely 30 hours. Th=
e Blizzard of '78 hit, and we had to go home at speed.
Our town got almost 30 inches of snow in a literal meteorological heartbeat=
and my mother, a town official, was tasked to ride herd over the plowing. =
I did not see her for a week. She gave everything she had to put the town r=
ight, as did all the town employees. They left it all on the streets they c=
leared.
You might have heard rumor that Boston has enjoyed the equivalent of four "=
Blizzard of '78" storms. The same goes for my little corner of New Hampshir=
e; nearly 100 inches of snow have hit the ground in the last four weeks=E2=
=80=A6 and the town employees tasked to plow my corner of the world have be=
en out, all night and every night. They haven't slept. The roads are clear.=
Who did that? Municipal employees, union members, incredibly dedicated wor=
kers each and all.

Just a friendly reminder for the next time you hear someone babbling about =
how government is the problem. It takes enormous work to hold a village, a =
town or a city together when all Hell is breaking loose. I've been there, I=
've seen it. These stories of the heroic daily labor performed by unions an=
