t r u t h o u t | Lately, politicians seem to be falling over themselves to=
declare how much they love free speech. Yet from Washington, DC to Paris, =
France, this loudly proclaimed commitment to free expression and freedom of=
the press doesn't seem to line up with their actually track record or poli=
cies.

Of course, this isn't new. In the United States, our government has histori=
cally been keen to lecture other countries on the need for dissent while do=
ing its best to quash it at home - from whistleblowers to protesters, from =
John Kiriakou to Chelsea Manning, from James Risen to Edward Snowden. Meanw=
hile, we have a corporate media that is all too willing to work to ensure t=
hat dominant narratives are never questioned.

At Truthout, we believe a free press doesn't just require freedom from the =
fear that the government will try to prosecute journalists for doing their =
job or pressure them to reveal sources - although that's vital. True freedo=
m of the press also means being free from the pressures that come when medi=
a outlets are owned by mega-corporations or when their budgets are dependen=
t on advertising.

Maintaining our independence isn't always easy, but it is essential to stay=
ing who we are. Can you help Truthout keep doing that by making a tax-deduc=
tible donation tonight?
