t r u t h o u t | I was heartened that, in his State of the Union address o=
n Tuesday night, President Obama mentioned prison reform. However, the pres=
ident implied that the worst was over=C2=AD: Incarceration rates are on the=
ir way down, he said.
The president forgot to mention that incarceration rates have declined so s=
lightly that the actual number of people behind bars increased in 2013 (the=
last time it was measured). Two and a half million people in this country,=
=C2=ADprimarily poor people of color, =C2=ADare still living in cages. Tha=
t towering injustice has rippling effects that touch us all.
At Truthout, we know that mass incarceration will not fall without a massiv=
e movement against it. Neither will the racist policing that not only spurs=
brutal violence, but also serves as the gateway to prison.
These movements need a courageous media behind them: journalists who speak =
the truth about this system and the deep=C2=AD-seated injustice that drives=
it. Truthout's work on this topic has long been unparalleled. Since we don=
't ally ourselves with political parties or advertisers, we aren't afraid t=
o tell you what's really going on, even when it doesn't line up with the rh=
