t r u t h o u t | Engraved within the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands are these stirring lines by the poet Emma Lazarus, written in 1883:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
The Statue of Liberty is still, in 2014, an iconic image of US liberty, but it would be more appropriate to have a figure with a broom sweeping away those seeking freedom, economic survival and safety. This mood infects far too many Americans and most of our political leaders: "Extinguish the welcoming torch of democracy and stick a 'No Trespassing' sign on Ellis Island!"
