t r u t h o u t | At some point this month many of us are going to find ourselves face to face, in a heated debate, with the fiercest of all opponents - a family member.
Well, that's my experience of the holidays at least. It's as though something in the stuffing turns my in-laws into avid (or is that rabid?) political commentators - and I love it. But it also makes me think a lot about the news the majority of people tune into and how independent voices can be shut out of the discussion.
I see family gatherings as an opportunity to listen and share different perspectives and sources of information... and, of course, to point out that mainstream media is controlled by greedy corporate puppet masters!
But the best strategy in promoting independent media is taking ownership of the news sources you mention. Explain to people that Truthout is funded by its readers and that you're one of them - you'll be amazed at how much more receptive people can be when they know you have a personal investment in what you're talking about.
