t r u t h o u t | When you watch cable news, open a newspaper or visit a ma=
instream media website, it can be all too obvious who is pulling the string=
s. It's usually either one of the consolidated mega-corporations that own s=
o many media outlets these days, or other corporations pulling the strings =
via the advertising money they spend (or withhold).
There's no corporate power pulling Truthout's strings - instead, we answer =
to our readers. Recently somebody asked us: Isn't that the same thing? Ever=
yone answers to someone, so what's the difference between answering to corp=
orate owners or sponsors and answering to readers?
We think there are some key differences. First of all, we believe corporati=
ons are not people. Secondly, not taking corporate ad money means Truthout'=
s editorial decisions are driven by the public good, not by a "pro-business=
" agenda. Finally, instead of one or two billionaires with the power to con=
trol what we do and don't publish, we have a community of readers who value=
challenging news stories and intellectual debate.
