When I first heard "Don't Believe The Hype" by Public Enemy, I was a teenag=
er whose only first-hand experience with media was writing the occasional o=
p-ed for a school newspaper. But that lyric stuck with me - and more than 2=
5 years after its release, it seems more relevant than ever.
Media can be an absolutely vital thing, informing the public and adding pow=
er to efforts to secure justice. False media, however - reckless and irresp=
onsible media, or media that deliberately only serves the interests of thos=
e in power - can be incredibly dangerous.
The media can cheer governments on to war, deny the importance of climate c=
hange, blame victims for the violence they suffer, and mislead us about whe=
re our tax dollars are being spent. I don't think it's controversial to say=
that there's more bad media out there today than good. Truthout is in the =
minority - that's why what we do is so important.
And what we do depends on your support, because it's our refusal of corpora=
te money that keeps us truly independent. We urgently need to raise almost =
$33,000 more in the next few days if we're going to continue our mission of=
giving people the facts and debunking media myths. Will you play a part in=
