Before and After Ferguson

t r u t h o u t | Since the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson, corporate media has paid a little more attention to the issue of police violence. In time though, their coverage will wane. While that may seem like a cynical view of mainstream news, it's simply the case that corporate media can't afford to care about the issues beyond the ad revenue any given story will bring.
Truthout, however, has been reporting on the unjust criminalization of African-Americans and the ongoing militarization of local police departments across the United States, long before the residents of Ferguson forced cable TV to take notice by making a stand. And we will be long after.
The stories I write, together with those by my fellow staff reporter Mike Ludwig and other Truthout contributors, cover the police brutality aimed disproportionately at some people just because of their race, gender identity, or sexuality - people whose voices are often overlooked. We explore not just clear illegal abuses, but also accepted everyday policing practices and the systems and culture from which they stem. As with every issue Truthout covers, we go below the surface to uncover the root causes.
Because we don't depend on corporate advertising, Truthout is able to stand without fear with the communities demanding police accountability - but this also means we need the support of our readers.
