t r u t h o u t | "We also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the natu=
re of our military has changed."
President Obama's famous quip, in the final presidential debate of 2012, wa=
s celebrated at the time for making Mitt Romney look foolish (not the most =
difficult of tasks).
But reading it two years later, one can't help but think the president acci=
dentally let slip a line from a military propaganda memo. The concept of th=
e evolving nature of the US military has been used increasingly in pro-war =
rhetoric - but mainly to downplay the actual fact that we are at war. Now, =
wars are not "real" unless there are "boots on the ground." Drones don't co=
unt. Bombs don't count. No boots, no war. All of which has the effect of ma=
king too many people accept or ignore the latest expression of US military =
force.
So, what can we do about it? Ironically, one of the best things we can do i=
s borrow something from President Obama's own playbook, back when he was ju=
st a hopeful candidate: We can build a movement. Truthout has over a quarte=
r of a million email subscribers and half a million Facebook fans. Every da=
y, we publish articles that tackle the issues that most need to change - li=
ke the folly and cruelty that characterize so much of US foreign policy.=20
Truthout needs to sustain and build on our work, and we need to reach more =
people - we can only do that with your help. These are serious times and th=
e need for your support is critical. Please, help us with a tax-deductible =
donation tonight!
