t r u t h o u t | On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people marched in New=
York City to demand that world leaders address the urgent reality of clima=
te change. Yesterday, more activists faced arrests and pepper spray to "Flo=
od Wall Street," taking direct action to hold financiers and captains of co=
rporate industry accountable for the role they've played in polluting the p=
lanet.
But even those who participated in these actions agree: It's not enough. Th=
is work is far from finished. Standing up to the wealthiest and most powerf=
ul people in the world and insisting they stop a pattern of environmental d=
estruction that has made them very rich? It's hard to think of bigger chall=
enges - except the others that we urgently need to address. Like putting th=
e brakes on the US war machine (currently on display again, bombarding Syri=
a), or ending the staggering gap between the rich and the poor.
These are immense tasks. They can seem insurmountable. But when ordinary pe=
ople come together, they can achieve great things. At Truthout, we know tha=
t for sure. Why? Because the support of ordinary people is what's kept us g=
