l ordinance in Los Angeles that had made it a crime to use a car for overni=
ght shelter. It's a huge victory, in a way, for the rights of homeless peop=
le.
Wait a minute - why was sleeping in a car made a crime in the first place? =
It's a sad reflection of how poverty and homelessness are increasingly puni=
shed in the United States.
For every victory, it seems there's a reminder of how much more work needs =
to be done. On Wednesday the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that police mu=
st obtain a warrant to search your cellphone, in a rare win for digital pri=
vacy. Unfortunately, today Supreme Court justices also all agreed it's unco=
nstitutional to allow a 35-foot buffer zone between abortion clinics and an=
ti-choice protesters - making it harder for women to get the health care th=
ey need without being harassed.=20
What's the point of this rundown? It's that Truthout keeps score. Criminali=
zation of the homeless, threats to civil liberties, access to reproductive =
