t r u t h o u t | Since news broke of sleep-deterrent spikes being installed in areas frequented by homeless people, I've thought a lot about my father. Born in the 1950s and a successful business owner in his twenties, he died alone and homeless from a heroin overdose at the age of just 42.
I've spent a great deal of time attempting to understand all of the moving parts in my father's life, but I keep coming back to a singular realization - his life was not very different from the lives of the vast majority of Americans.
No matter how well we're doing at any given moment as individuals, we are all struggling against a system that is designed to exploit the majority and enrich the few. Many of us will face, at some point in our lives, job insecurity, low wages, debt, high credit card rates, exorbitant penalties for late payments, unforgiving foreclosure policies, high tuition fees or unrealistic medical costs.
Economic inequality is a collective issue: We need to stop blaming the victims and start blaming the oppressors. That's why at Truthout, we investigate the ugly roots of systematic injustice - the real causes of growing poverty, untenable debt, addiction, imprisonment and homelessness - and we explore solutions.
