t r u t h o u t | On a flight back from Washington, D.C. this past weekend, the woman sitting next to me - intent on chatting, despite my clear intention of taking a snooze - asked, "What do you do?" I paused. When asked this question by strangers, I tend to put forth the elusive, "I'm a journalist," which generally elicits responses like, "That must be fun!"
But this time, the intensity of the present chaos - the prospect of the US military's return to Iraq, threats to the survival of public education, congressional obstruction of legislation to confront mass incarceration, persistent political weakness in facing catastrophic climate change, and the corporate media that perpetuates it all - prompted me to say something different. "I work," I said, "for a very disruptive organization!"
It's true. "We are all deemed out of order when we are not silent," as Truthout's Mark Karlin commented a while back. Truthout is fundamentally "out of order," and proud of it. We disrupt the unjust systems embedded in our society, every day - and we will continue to do so as long as we're able.
