t r u t h o u t | Every single day, you can read about some kind of heinous incident involving police brutality in municipalities across the country, from puppies shot by police in front of children - to people shot by police in front of children.
These incidents, taken together as a broader trend, point to the institutionalization of deadly force and barbarity as legitimate police practices. The hardest crackdown has been on marginalized groups, who have been targets of police violence since far back in US history.
The Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice is actively investigating or monitoring more police departments across the nation for having a "pattern or practice" of violating the Constitutional rights of citizens - including excessive use of deadly force - than at any time in the Division's history.
For some of these besieged communities, the situation is dire. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, the subject of a recent report I wrote for Truthout, the local police department kills more people per capita than the NYPD. Residents there know that it's not about a few "bad apples" on the force, but about a culture of corruption.
Truthout plans to bring you more watchdog reporting that doesn't just focus on isolated incidents of police brutality, but digs beneath the surface to get at the roots of the institution itself and questions its authority. This kind of in-depth, challenging journalism is rare - and it can only happen with the support of our readers.
Our current fundraising drive has started slowly. We still need to raise $45,000 in the next week. Will you help us get closer to our goal tonight by making a tax-deductible donation?
