t r u t h o u t | "There ought to be at least as much common sense about living and dying as there is about going to the grocery store and buying a loaf of bread," wrote Dalton Trumbo in his classic anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun. This line has been much on my mind of late as this somnambulant country and its government are finally waking to the incredible scandal surrounding how our war veterans are being treated - or, more to the point, mistreated - by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
We have enough money and logistical sense to send them off into the meat-grinders of all the wars and quasi-wars we've been fighting in this brave new century, but we can't seem to bother helping them when they come limping home with missing limbs and brain trauma and PTSD, and begin committing suicide in record numbers...
...and what galls me the most is watching the "mainstream" media, and the Obama administration, and Congress, act as if this is some new thing in the universe. The horrifying stories of gross neglect suffered by wounded war veterans at Walter Reed Medical Center were first reported seven years ago. SEVEN years ago.
Truthout has been reporting on this issue ever since, combining the facts of this galling phenomenon with an all-important truth: A nation that does not care for its war veterans has no business making new ones.
