t r u t h o u t | The last time it was 6 degrees Celsius hotter on Earth, there were snakes the size of yellow school buses in the Amazon and the largest mammal was the size of a shrew.
Hard to imagine - but 6 degrees Celsius is the worst-case scenario rise in temperature envisioned for the year 2100 by the ever-conservative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It's a change that would result in a planet virtually uninhabitable for human beings.
Climate change is accelerating so rapidly now that climate modeling cannot even keep up. Yet if you watch or read corporate media, reporters continue to give space to climate change deniers or, just as bad, continue to report on the "debate" over climate change.
The crisis is happening, it is real, it is worsening, and Truthout gets it. That's one of the reasons I was so happy to join the team here. I've begun writing monthly Climate Disruption Dispatches to keep you up to date on global developments, reports, and extreme weather events, in addition to the excellent environmental reporting that has long since been a Truthout mainstay.
Another reason I was glad to join Truthout? It's one of the few genuinely independent media outlets that exists.
