t r u t h o u t | The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster has received inter=
national news coverage since the power plant's catastrophic failure three y=
ears ago this month. As much coverage as it deserves? Maybe not.
But while we think it's important that mainstream media step up on major en=
vironmental catastrophes, we also have to ask: Where are they on all the ot=
hers?
On Monday, Truthout's Dahr Jamail reported how a leak at a New Mexico nucle=
ar waste storage site in February exposed at least 13 workers to radiation.=
Pollution disasters are coming thick and fast - from the 39,000 tons of co=
al ash released into North Carolina's Dan River in February, to the recent =
oil spills in Lake Michigan and Houston's Galveston Bay.
How catastrophic does an event need to be for the mainstream news to cover =
it? With your help, Truthout has published innumerable articles on the reck=
less profit-seeking of energy corporations, the lax regulations and bad pol=
icy that put communities at risk, and the human cost when things inevitably=
go wrong.=20
We don't just report the ugly details at Truthout - we also examine the sys=
tems that allow these disasters to happen and that allow those responsible =
to get away with it. Publishing this kind of challenging, in-depth journali=
sm relies on your continued support: Will you help us raise the $42,000 we =
still need by making a tax-deductible donation today?
