t r u t h o u t | Like many people, I wake up in the morning, make a coffee, and start clicking through news websites. I'm fairly forgiving until the caffeine kicks in and I start to navigate toward the few that are in line with my values.
The idea of values in news is very important to me and recently lead me to apply for the job as Truthout's Development Director. I'm very happy to be part of the Truthout team!
Here's why: The growing disconnect in mainstream media between journalists and the stories they produce makes the need for independent media more pressing than ever. Truthout publishes daily examples of how powerful news can be when journalists have a personal stake in the subject, whether it's Maya Schenwar writing about her epilepsy or William Rivers Pitt on his personal experience with health insurance companies.
Not every story can be driven by personal experience - but shouldn't every story be driven by the same level of passion and interest in the subject? That's what Truthout strives for.
Truthout's values can be seen in other ways. When I'm scrolling through news sites, I notice whether they respect my intelligence and time, or try to grab my attention with sensationalist clickbait so they can profit from ads. Truthout is nonprofit and we don't run ads - that's one of the cornerstones of our journalistic integrity.
The majority of our funding comes from individual donations made by readers just like you: readers who've decided it's important to support media that shares their values.
If you feel the same way, I encourage you to make a tax-deductible donation to Truthout today. *The continued existence of this remarkable news organization depends on you!
