t r u t h o u t | The media is a powerful tool. Like so many tools, it can =
also be used as a weapon.
If misused - and it is often misused - media can destroy lives. It can crus=
h, or at the very least discredit and discourage social movements. Media ca=
n be used to reinforce the official narrative and to silence dissenting voi=
ces, to push people's needs aside and to leave out inconvenient truths. It =
can re-traumatize victims of violence. In extreme cases - like when news ou=
tlets become cheerleaders for war - media can even kill.
Or then again:
Media can be used to amplify the voices of people who have been ignored or =
oppressed. It can drag injustices into the light and offer the possibility =
of justice. It can comfort people by letting them know they are not alone; =
it can educate them and inspire them to take action. To the extent that med=
ia is a weapon, it can be aimed "upwards" - at powerful bullies. Against al=
l odds, and in the face of threats from actual, physical weapons, it can ev=
en win.
That's what we're trying to do at Truthout. We take this responsibility inc=
redibly seriously, and we think we're doing a pretty good job - better ever=
