t r u t h o u t | Who are your heroes?

There are plenty of people in the world who would answer by naming either Jesus Christ or Nelson Mandela. Two of Truthout's new Progressive Picks examine how and why these men became hailed as heroes. These books reveal details that are often overlooked in the most common accounts of their lives - even in the relatively recent case of Mandela, whom the mainstream media and political elites are so keen to appropriate.

Journalist Betty Medsger recently revealed the identities of some other, less celebrated heroes: a mild-mannered physics professor at Haverford College and his seven accomplices, who on the night of March 8, 1971 broke into a FBI office in Pennsylvania under cover of darkness and stole every file in the office.

What they found revealed the agency's illegal surveillance and suppression of individuals who challenged government policy. Following the subsequent media outrage, restrictions were put in place to curb FBI spying on political dissidents - and yet today we find ourselves facing a new wave of evidence of government surveillance.

Whoever your heroes are, we all need inspiration for today's struggles. Find your inspiration in one of our Progressive Picks, available for order today with a minimum donation to Truthout!

The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover's Secret FBI
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=75389 ]
By Betty Medsger
For more than 40 years, the burglars of an FBI satellite office in a Philadelphia suburb were never arrested or discovered. Now, in a gripping narrative, "The Burglary" reveals the identities of the anti-war activists who carried off the 1971 heist and exposed a national covert FBI operation aimed at the surveillance of dissidents and the suppression of First Amendment rights.

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=75747
By Reza Aslan
A better title for this best seller would be: 'Jesus Against Empire'," says Paul Buhle in his review of "Zealot" for Truthout. This radical version of the life of the historical Jesus positions him in the context both of backwoods Nazareth, a "windswept hamlet" without even enough wood to train a carpenter, and of Jewish rebellion against the occupying Romans - and it explains how the Roman empire ended up swallowing up Christianity.

Inequality For All
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=75105
Directed by Jacob Kornbluth, featuring Robert Reich
This documentary film is an engaging overview of how the United States came to be a nation that is distinguished by its concentration of wealth in the top 10%. Reich is no radical, but the former secretary of labor in the Clinton administration now advocates relentlessly for a redistribution of income to the working class - and for some basic economic fairness.

Madiba A to Z: The Many Faces of Nelson Mandela
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=75039
By Danny Schechter
Schechter's new book, accessibly organized into alphabetical sections about Mandela's life, provides a revealing contextual background to the man and the leader. It includes not just Mandela's fight against oppression and victory over apartheid, but also the extent to which he was unable to prevent South Africa's economic power remaining concentrated in white and western hands.
