There are plenty of people in the world who would answer by naming either Jesus Christ or Nelson Mandela. Two of Truthout's new Progressive Picks examine how and why these men became hailed as heroes. These books reveal details that are often overlooked in the most common accounts of their lives - even in the relatively recent case of Mandela, whom the mainstream media and political elites are so keen to appropriate.
Journalist Betty Medsger recently revealed the identities of some other, less celebrated heroes: a mild-mannered physics professor at Haverford College and his seven accomplices, who on the night of March 8, 1971 broke into a FBI office in Pennsylvania under cover of darkness and stole every file in the office.
What they found revealed the agency's illegal surveillance and suppression of individuals who challenged government policy. Following the subsequent media outrage, restrictions were put in place to curb FBI spying on political dissidents - and yet today we find ourselves facing a new wave of evidence of government surveillance.
