t r u t h o u t | In 1971, anti-war activists broke into an office in a Phi=
ladelphia suburb, stole FBI files, and revealed a program of illegal spying=
and repression against individuals who challenged government policy.
The daring culprits were never caught, but media coverage of what had been =
exposed led to new restrictions on the FBI's surveillance operations. The p=
eople who carried out the burglary have been hailed by many as heroes.
Fast-forward to 2014. Thanks to whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning and Edw=
ard Snowden, we now know about NSA mass surveillance, war crimes committed =
by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and more. But the people who exposed =
these secrets are in jail or exile, and today's mainstream media has a nast=
y habit of cheering their punishment and downplaying their revelations.
That's why independent media is so essential. Exposing wrongdoing and secre=
ts that should be public knowledge is a crucial part of what Truthout does =
