t r u t h o u t | During this brutal winter, as humans toil away for shelte=
r, heat and clothing, corporations (in yet another move that suggests they =
are not people) are busy buying judges.

Thanks to the millions of dollars being flung toward judicial races by prof=
it=C2=AD-hungry companies, our state supreme courts are packed with justice=
s who've been bought by business. These judges, as Truthout's Mike Ludwig r=
eported yesterday, are much more likely to rule in favor of business litiga=
nts =C2=ADstripping rights from real people.

This story reveals a painful symptom of how money is used to break human li=
ves in this country. It's also an example of why we at Truthout have taken =
the radical step of refusing to have any part in the corporate system we cr=
itique.

Not only are we a nonprofit, but we also don't take advertising or corporat=
e sponsorships. It's not easy, which is why we're one of the only organizat=
ions that has taken this route. But we do it because we must remain free to=
hold corporations accountable. And we can do it because we have all of you=
: the people who stand for this freedom.

And so, dear human, if you can make a tax-deductible contribution to this u=
nique organization, I urge you to do so. Your money won't buy any judges, b=
ut it will fund that rare breed of journalism that paves the way for justic=
e.=20
