t r u t h o u t | A recent Oxfam study found that just 85 global oligarchs own as much as half of the world's population. Within the United States, just 400 families have wealth and assets approximately equivalent to 50 percent of the citizens in the United States.
That would be shocking enough, except that the gap is growing, not declining. Due to record setting stock market prices and corporations sitting on profits earned, often, from forcing down the cost of labor, the top 1% are becoming gluttonously richer.
These are stunning statistics that get lost in the mainstream media, given that the owners of the mega-news conglomerates benefit from the increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.
On Truthout and BuzzFlash, however, these are not passing headlines lost amidst titillating stories about celebrities or the latest coverage of DC politics as a sporting event. It is what we report on everyday - and we will continue to do with your support.
