t r u t h o u t | One week ago, in just one day: A father is shot by a retired cop for the crime of texting his daughter during the previews of a movie in a theater; a "New York Post" columnist calls the Newtown massacre "convenient" in print; the federal spending deal agreed to by both chambers of Congress slashes funding for Wall Street watchdogs; a 12-year-old shoots two fellow students, one in the face, with a sawed-off shotgun; thousands of people in West Virginia are left without drinking water because a site that hasn't undergone an inspection since 1991 dumped poison into the river, and the Republican Speaker of the House says, "We have enough regulations already"...

...and you may soon never again hear about any of these kinds of things, because of the other big news story of one terrible day, January 14, 2014: The District of Colombia Appeals Court overthrew the FCC's "Net Neutrality" rule, effectively ending open internet for all. The last bastion of pure democracy and open information has, for the time being, been delivered to the pay-for-play corporations that are most threatened by the free flow of information. The foxes, in short, are in the henhouse.

Truthout's very existence is in deep peril because of this decision. We have spent all of our time calling these people to account, and now they are on the cusp of owning the ability to decide who sees what online, and for how much.

Now, well and truly, is the winter of our discontent. Whether we survive this poisoned season is up to you. These people actively seek to cease our existence, because we dare to speak fundamental truth to intolerant power. More than ever before, we need your help.
