t r u t h o u t | In October 2011, I joined the Occupy movement. I was eager to do my part to fight for social justice. Unfortunately, the mainstream media ignored us when possible - and frequently misrepresented us when they did cover us.
That's why independent outlets like Truthout are so crucial in making sure that the voices of activists and movements are not silenced.
I currently help manage Truthout's social media presence, which means I get to see first-hand how much of an impact our stories have. A recent article we posted on climate change was shared on Facebook by our readers over a thousand times. There's a clear demand for stories and perspectives that are absent from the mainstream media but can be found at Truthout.
I'm also proud to say I'm a paid intern: Despite running on a tight budget, Truthout is committed to putting its money where its mouth is.
Because Truthout doesn't take money from corporate advertisers, we depend on reader support. We must raise at least $32,000 more, and right now a matching grant will double any tax-deductible donation you make - can you help?
