t r u t h o u t | "People call me a socialist sometimes. But, no, you gotta=
meet real socialists. You'll have a sense of what a socialist is."
It's a reflection of the narrow range of political discourse in the United =
States that President Obama felt the need to say this. Step just slightly o=
utside the bounds of conventional wisdom - by arguing, say, that the riches=
t Americans need to pay their share in taxes - and you may as well be weari=
ng a hammer and sickle t-shirt.
But if you want to meet a real socialist in America, you can find one among=
our elected officials: Seattle made history recently by electing Kshama Sa=
want. She's the first big-city socialist council member the United States h=
as seen in decades, and says it's capitalism that has become a "dirty word.=
"
Meanwhile, Vermont's Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist,=
says he's open to a presidential run in 2016. And while New York City's ne=
w mayor Bill de Blasio may not be the "Cuba-loving socialist" his opponents=
claimed, he did surge to victory - after running fourth in the polls - by =
taking a stand against income inequality and the NYPD's "stop and frisk" po=
licy.
It seems many Americans are no longer scared to talk about the word "social=
ism" and its many interpretations - and at Truthout, we want to encourage t=
hat debate.
Truthout is here to provide a forum for political philosophies you won't us=
ually find given a fair hearing elsewhere in the media. We believe in broad=
ening the conversation about what kind of society is possible and desirable=
. If you share that belief, we need your help: Please support our work with=
