t r u t h o u t | As winter begins and the holidays approach, it's always worth counting our blessings. So what are we thankful for?
The title of Nathan Schneider's "Thank You, Anarchy" refers, in part, to the ongoing influence of Occupy Wall Street. This new account not only reveals details about how the original occupation of Zucotti Park in New York City came to be, but also looks at the potential for transformation that the Occupy movement has ignited across the United States and indeed the world.
Chicago is just one of the cities in which the struggle between the 99% and the 1% continues, as illustrated by the fact that Rahm Emanuel continues to be known as "Mayor 1%". You can learn more about Mayor Emanuel's battles with everyone from teachers to mental health patients in Kari Lydersen's book of the same name.

Thank You, Anarchy: Notes From the Occupy Apocalypse
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=72680
By Nathan Schneider
What did it look like from the inside of the Occupy movement as it reached its zenith in Zucotti Park and around the nation, even the world? What is its legacy? Nathan Schneider's brilliantly candid and detailed inside account of Occupy Wall Street tells the story of the movement as it grew to national prominence only to be displaced by brutal police action around the nation.
Mayor 1%: Rahm Emanuel and the Rise of Chicago's 99%
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=73279
By Kari Lydersen
Will Rahm Emanuel's efforts to establish a privatized neoliberal outpost in Chicago succeed? In her new book, journalist and author Kari Lydersen chronicles both Emanuel's upbringing and career - including his role in legislation such as Clinton's "welfare reform" - and the spreading discontent with and movements working against his corporate, authoritarian reign.
They Were Soldiers: How the Wounded Return from America's Wars - The Untold Story
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=73400
By Ann Jones
After years focusing on the civilian toll of the war in Afghanistan, at the age of 73 Ann Jones embedded on an American forward operating base to experience that war from the point of view of US troops - and went on to follow the fate of grievously wounded American soldiers. "They Were Soldiers" has already been described by Tom Engelhardt as "nothing short of an odyssey," while David Swanson says: "Know a young person considering joining the military? Give them this book. Know a person not working to end war? Give them this book."
2014 Peace Calendar: We Protect What We Love
https://co.clickandpledge.com/advanced/default.aspx?wid=71812
From Syracuse Cultural Workers
A long-time favorite with Truthout readers, each month of the Peace Calendar from Syracuse Cultural Workers illustrates a different but vitally important issue, from photos of radically sustainable dwellings built from naturally available resources and recycled materials, to artwork about the prison industrial complex by the incarcerated Kevin Rashid Johnson. Filled with informative annotations and including holidays for many faiths, the 2014 Peace Calendar is an ideal holiday gift.
