Our political debate these past several months has been a frightening verification of Sagan's fears for our nation. Giving a whole new definition to the term "know nothings," Tea Party politicians and their fervent followers are proud of their ignorance. They want to keep on their blinders to justify their charge to "take America back" to a time when only select groups had the full rights of American citizenship and the rest of us knew our place.
Truthout is the antidote to this attempt to paint the world in ignorant and simplistic terms. We celebrate knowledge and varied public discourse, backed up by facts.
But it isn't easy to do the heavy lifting to counteract this avalanche of programmed ignorance. Our staff works hard to give our readers in-depth reporting and opinion - and we can only keep our website free from paywalls and advertising by relying on our readers.
