What We've Done, What We Need to Do

t r u t h o u t | Well, it sure was one hell of a week, wasn't it?
If you had put the question to me early last week, I would have bet long money that we would be flipping missiles and bombs into Syria by now. And at any point over the last six months, I would have bet long money that President Obama was going to nominate Larry Summers to be chairman of the Fed.
These things didn't happen, thanks to a combination of factors that very much included regular, everyday people giving an earful to the Obama administration and their own congressional representatives. That's you. That's me. That's us.
When the Syria crisis erupted, Truthout's reporters and columnists went to great lengths to explain in detail why the president's planned attack was the highest form of folly. As for Mr. Summers, well... we've been thrashing the very idea of his nomination since the day it was first floated. In both instances, we were right, and in both instances, we helped turn the tide.
We provided the information and reporting. You provided the advocacy and the shoe leather. Given the events of this last week, I think it can be plainly stated that we make one hell of a team.
But so much remains to be done.
The grim mass shooting in Washington, D.C., reminded us that it can be a lot easier to get deadly weapons in this country than it is to get mental health care. Right this moment, the House GOP is trying to throw nearly four million Americans off food stamps while simultaneously defunding health care under threat of debt default and a government shutdown. People need to know what this means, and we intend to tell them.
